FESTA

Festival of Transitional Architecture

4th Year Project

In this class project, we produced a light installation for the FESTA, the Festival of Transitional Architecture held in Christchurch.  We worked in collaboration with Punky Brewster Craft Beer to create this pavilion bar. We draw from the elements of beer and brewing beer at a microscopic level to create this temporary experience of taking the drink out of the glass through light, scale, and sound.

Named CHOH-LAB our concept explores the 5000 year old history of human’s relationship with brewing.  We’ve designed CHOH-LAB as a ‘Bar of the Future’ in which the sensory experience of brewing takes the drink out of the glass and creates unique environment in which to have a pint. CHOH-LAB is an environment in which people are immersed in a micro environment focused solely on the experience of beer, and encountering it on a microscopic scale, as though, by choosing to move into the space, you had entered the drink itself.

The patterns, shapes and symbols in this installation are drawn from the imagery of beer at a microscopic level, giving a unique sense of the fermentation process.  Further to this, the soundscape draws on data of current and historical trends in relation to beer consumption in New Zealand and internationally. Inspired by the chemical symbols, blooming yeast cultures and fluid imagery of brewing we aim to celebrate the chemical love story of our ongoing and future relationship with yeast, brewing and beer.

Structural Team

The structural team (Georgina, Ellie and I) designed the structure and details of this installation while liaising with the engineers at FESTA. We focused on how this design will function with consideration to, positioning, materiality and foot traffic; All while portraying our concept and designing an immersive user-journey experience.

The kitchen bar was a large aspect of our installation that we needed to consider, along with public safety.
